Vorankündigung: A Tolkien Tapestry – Bilder von Cor Blok

Diesen September veröffentlicht HarperCollins einen Kunstband mit mehr als 100 vom Herrn der Ringe inspirierten Gemälden vom holländischen Künstler Cor Blok.

Laut HarperCollins hat Cor Blok den Herrn der Ringe kurz nach seiner Erstveröffentlichung gelesen und war von dessen Imagination und epischen Geschichten fasziniert. Die Trilogie inspirierte den jungen Künstler Kunst zu entwerfen, die historischen Artefakten ähnelte. Tolkiens Verleger Rayner Unwin sah Bloks Bilder 1961 bei einer Ausstellung in Den Haag. Er schickte Tolkien einige Bilder, die der Autor so mochte, dass er sich mit dem Künstler traf, mit ihm korrespondierte und selbst einige Gemälde kaufte.

HarperCollins vergleicht die Serie mit dem Teppich von Bayeux “wobei jedes Bild eine epische und komplexe Geschichte in trügerisch einfachem Stil erzählt”, durchsetzt von einer starken Formsprache. Die farbigen Bilder, manche von ihnen zum ersten Mal veröffentlicht, werden in der Reihenfolge der Geschichte präsentiert, zusammen mit Auszügen aus dem Herrn der Ringe und Notizen des Künstlers zur Komposition und Entstehung.

“Selten hat ein Künstler die Essenz des Werks eines Autors in solch einmaliger Art und Weise eingefangen; der Autor schätzte viel an Cor Bloks Arbeit, welch höheren Lob kann es geben?” sagt HarperCollins.

This September, HarperCollins will publish a full-colour art book with more than 100 paintings based on The Lord of the Rings by Dutch artist Cor Blok.

According to HarperCollins, Cor Blok read The Lord of the Rings just after it was first published and was captivated by its invention and epic storytelling. The trilogy inspired the young artist to create art that resembled historical artefacts. Tolkien’s publisher Rayner Unwin saw Blok’s pictures at an exhibition in The Hague in 1961. He sent Tolkien some pictures, which the author liked to such an extent that he met and corresponded with the artist and bought some paintings for himself.

HarperCollins compares the series with the Bayeux Tapestry “in which each tells an epic and complex story in deceptively simple style” layered with a powerful language of form. The full-colour paintings, some of which have not previously been published, are presented in story order and accompanied by extracts from The Lord of the Rings and notes on composition and creation by the artist.

“Rarely has an artist captured the essence of a writer’s work in such singular fashion; the author found much to admire in Cor Blok’s work, and what higher accolade is there?” says HarperCollins.
