Ring*Con 2012: Der Hobbit kommt!

Bild: Hobbiton von Tara HuntThe most important news from today’s press conference at Ring*Con: Beware of the Hobbit! Next year’s focus will be on a film based on one of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works again. Stefan Servos, owner of the herr-der-ringe-film.de website and long-time member of the DTG, announced the news to a lot of applause this morning.

Filming of the two-part Hobbit films has started about half a year ago in New Zealand. The next Ring*Con will take place just before the premiere of the first movie. The two New Zealand actors Mark Ferguson and Lori Dungey, Gil-Galad and Mrs Bracegirdle in the Lord of the Rings films, will not be involved this time. “I am glad that Peter Jackson gets to direct again,” said Ferguson. “That will provide for some consistency. But I have to say I’m a bit upset that they did not ask me to play a hobbit,” the tall actor added with a wink. “The Hobbit features neither women nor hobbits, apart from one, but the films will still be brilliant,” said Dungey. Filming has not caused quite such a sensation in New Zealand as it did last time. “The process has been professionalised,” said Dungey. “The first time around, it was a great adventure, almost a religious experience.”

Mark Ferguson is the only actor – who has taken the role of Master of Ceremonies by now – who has been at all Ring*Cons so far. He takes a look back for the 10th jubilee of Europe’s largest fantasy convention: “The first Con was quite terrifying for us. No one knew what to expect. The intensity, involvement and the knowledge of the fans is totally mind-boggling.” This time around, he is here as a fan as well. “I just love True Blood.”

Ring*Con continues until 16 October at Maritim Hotel in Bonn. Guest stars are actors from fantasy films and series such as The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Xena, Twilight, True Blood and The Vampire Diaries.
