Was hälst Du davon?

Richard Armitage – would have preferred to be Smaug

DTG Chairman Tobias M. Eckrich held a personal interview with Richard Armitage on 31 March 2014.

Did you know there is a petition on Facebook, to prevent Thorin from dying in the movies? What do you think about that?
I think you´ve just given away a massive spoiler for everyone who hasn´t read the book (laughs). I didn´t know there was a petition and I have to say I think it´s going to be fruitless, unfortunately.

How did your involvement with “The Hobbit” come about? Did you go to a regular casting or were you approached by the film makers?
It was a fairly traditional process, actually. I auditioned and was approved by the film makers and then I met Peter Jackson […] and that was it, I was casted, it was fairly straightforward.

Is being part of “The Hobbit” like any other acting job or is there something special about the  project?
I don´t think it has been like any other acting job that I´ve ever done. I mean it´s very rare that you get to play one character over three movies with a continuing storyline. And for such a long period of time and away from home, on the other side of the planet, so it´s not like anything I´ve done before. There was also lots of material that needed researching and has such an interest in complicated characters that needed preparation and transformation. So yes, it´s quite unique.

Was there a scene that was particularly difficult to shoot, in terms of acting or external influences?
I think the end of the second movie when the dwarves fight the dragon in the mountain, that was complicated because nothing existed. It was just a green box, there was no dragon, there were no forges, and we were completely relying on Peter´s description and the art department creating images for us so that we could visualise the world we were entering and really see the beast that there was in our mind´s eye.

What was the last movie you watched in your free time?
The last movie I´ve watched in my free time was “Captain Phillips”. It was one of my favourite movies of the year and I was quite surprised that Tom Hanks didn´t get an Oscar nomination, I think he would be very well deserving of that.

Which actors do you admire and do inspire your work? What are your role-models in terms of acting?
I´ve always been quite inspired by Gary Oldman, I think that he´s one of those actors who disappear into a role and you don´t notice that it is him playing. He´s one of my favourites.

You studied music and play several instruments. Did you take singing lessons for “The Hobbit”?
I did actually do a little bit of vocal training for “The Hobbit” as I wanted Thorin to sound like he wasn´t a trained singer. Also there was a certain bass quality that Tolkien described as being the deep throat singing of the dwarves, so I listened to a lot of Russian choral music and I worked with vocal coaches, trying to find a sound which I felt was appropriate.

How about forming a dwarvish boygroup?
A dwarvish boygroup, that would be a big band, wouldn´t it? With 13 of them, that would be quite a lot of choreography! (laughs heartily) Maybe I could cope with seven…

What music do you like to listen to?
I kind of fluctuate according to whatever job I´m doing, I´m very keen on Mumford and Sons and I like Florence and the Machine.

Do you listen to any German music?
I do listen to pieces of (Richard) Wagner, that´s definitely German… (laughs)

Did you read any of Tolkien’s works before the film?
Yes, obviously, The Hobbit. I did read The Lord of the Rings. I´ve read The Book of Lost Tales and a really great biography that was written about his life and I thought it quite interesting to see what his experiences were of the two World Wars that influenced his writing.

What did you like or not like about The Lord of Rings, for example? Which is your favourite character and which character do you not like?
I think my favourite character is probably going to be Gollum, because he was there in The Hobbit and it was one of those characters Tolkien just really enjoyed creating. And that very specific voice, which he describes so clearly, is very exciting. One of the characters I suppose I dislike is Grima Wormtongue. I think he is designed to be disliked and I guess enjoying to dislike a character like that is just compelling.

If you could play any character in Tolkien´s work, who would it be?
I probably would like to play Smaug. I´d like to have that ferocity and intelligence and that sort of arrogance that dragon has and I think he´s a fascinating creation!

What was it like to work with Benedict Cumberbatch? Did you have interactive shooting on set with him?
Benedict was never on the set, he was always in the sound stage but I did get to work face to face with him for the end of the second film, when Thorin and Smaug face each other. They brought me into the room where he was doing the voice-over and we did get to exchange eye contact, which was great!

What books do you like to read?
I kind of like biography. I´m reading a lot of political biography at the moment. I´m interested in North Korea, so I´m reading biographies of that country.

There are difficult legal issues concerning the possible license of a “Silmarillion” movie. Apart from that, if there ever will be other Tolkien films after “The Hobbit”: Would you like to return to Middle-earth once again?
I think the Silmarillion would make a rather brilliant film, although the fact that it´s so long and so focused on the characters suggests to me that it might make a great TV show, but it would be certainly an epic undertaking. I hope that this isn´t the end of seeing Middle-earth on the screen.

If you could date any character in Middle-earth, who would it be?
It´s got to be Galadriel, hasn´t it? I would like to take her dancing!

Is it sometimes hard to be a star? Are there any negative aspects of being famous?
With a movie like this it´s just brilliant because it has such a big following and such an excited fan-base. I´ve really enjoyed being part of this particular movie, and especially when we come to Germany, because the enthusiasm is so big and I never tire of that. It´s never a burden.

What projects are you currently working on?
I´ve got another movie coming out in summer called “Into the Storm”, which is a tornado disaster movie and I play a school teacher who goes on search for his lost son. You should probably see trailers of that at the moment.

The post-production of “The Hobbit” is done now. When is it all over, with the third “Hobbit” movie finished?
Probably sometime around this time next year when we´re finished talking about the third DVD release! That might probably be the end of it …
