Saruman goes Heavy Metal

Saruman goes Heavy Metal

Who does not know Sir Christopher Lee? There is a reason for an entry in the Guiness Book of World Records (i.e. with more than 250 films as an actor), not only his “Dracula” era. In recent years he has regained international stardom as the bad guy for both The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. His Saruman and Count Dooku will be unforgettable to generations of fans to come.

Lee has led a most fascinating life, not the least because of the fact that he is a descendant of the man himself, Charlemagne, via his blue-blooded Italian relatives. Not many know that he is also a professionally trained singer. This ability has led him to do Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross. Its style is called symphonic metal.

His outstanding work with the Danish Tolkien Ensemble has been well-received among Tolkien and fantasy fans alike (do not forget: members of the Ensemble are guests of honour at this year’s Thing). His cooperation with Italian metal Rhapsody of Fire is less well-known and that he actually sang with the kings of steel themselves, Manowar, might come as a surprise to many. Calling himself “metal” now at his ripe age is a most entertaining detail.

The man behind the project is Marco Sabiu. He has taken care of a UK and US release on March 15th (German fans will have to wait until April 16th.) The Italian musician, composer and producer has worked with Take That, Kylie Minogue and Luciano Pavarotti gearbeitet. The next big step will be to make this album into a full-blown musical. It is scheduled for a 2011 premiere.
