Tolkien’s Works on the Book Market – Tolkien Seminar 2025

From 31st October to 2nd November, the German Tolkien Society is hosting its annual Tolkien Seminar in co-operation with the Department of Book Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and with Walking Tree Publishers. This year’s topic will be “Tolkien’s Works on the Book Market”. 
Participation is free of charge. The organizers are grateful for advance registration with to help them with their planning, but it is also possible to participate in person without registration. 
As in past years, the conference will be held in a hybrid format. You can register for online participation below.

Presentations and schedule

Please note that there may still be some changes to the schedule. Talks marked with (p) will be held in place whereas talks marked with (v) will be video talks. Of course all video talks will be shown in place, just as the talks in Mainz will be transmitted for online participants. Conference languages are German and English. Titles of talks held in English are given in English, whereas the titles of German-language talks are given in German in the schedule below.

Information on how to get there

The seminar is taking place at the Alte Mensa of Johannes Gutenberg University (Johann-Joachim-Becher-Weg 3, 55128 Mainz). There will be signs from the entrance to the university campus to the seminar venue. Parking lots are available in front of and near the Alte Mensa. City buses and trams are also a good way to get to the venue. The next stops are Mainz Universität, Mainz Botanischer Garten and Bretzenheim Johannes-von-Müller-Weg. On Saturday, 1st November, all public transport is free and can be used without a ticket.

Please note that 1st November (All Hallows’ Day) is an official holiday, so shops and public amenities are likely to be closed! If you plan to do any shopping, it is advisable to do that on Friday.
