Wilfried Schönfelder gives an overview of our latest society magazine issue: Flammifer von Westernis no. 42 — very British.

Cover artist: Becky Hitchin

This issue’s cover features the illustration “Rohan” by British artist Becky Hitchin.

Brainstorming Weekend

“Is there some rice left?” asks Carola Oberbeck and tells us about the annual meeting of active society members that seeks to motivate and create new ideas for the future. This year, a mission statement was brought on its way that will have to be finalised at our AGM.

Stammtisch Baden-Pfalz

It’s been a while since the last DTG regulars’ table introduced itself in the magazine. Founded at the end of 2008, Stammtisch Baden-Pfalz managed to receive the coveted Frodoschka Award in 2010 already. There is a lot more to be expected from the smial based in OXford, including participation in the Tolkien Reading day this March.

The Tolkien Society (UK)

In our column “Middle-earth is everywhere”, we present sister societies from around the world. Finally, we got the mother of all Tolkien Societies, the British, to introduce itself. Ian Collier talks about close relations to the Tolkien family, smials, various events and what a BTS member means when he says “Oxonmoot” to you.

Interview with Kate Madison

Julian Eilmann follows his article on the low-budget fan film “Born of Hope” with an interview of the director.

Looking for the King – twice

Two reviews on David C. Downing’s book featuring the Inklings as characters – with two very different conclusions. Both already to be read online in their long version: Marcel Bülles vs Marie-Noelle Biemer.

Journeying in Middle-Earth

Patrick Puls relates his adventures in the Misty Mountains, climbing Dol Meglin, in a Middle-earth Live Action Role Play at Lake Wolfgang.

Númenor – Rise and Fall of an Empire

Part two of Andreas Zeilinger’s article, originally presented at Tolkien Thing 2010, on the history and political development of Westernesse.

Our society's magazine Der Flammifer von Westernis has appeared in its 41st edition.

Wilfried Schönfelder writes about finding the right pre-Christmas lecture in his letterbox in the German version of this article.

This issue’s cover features the illustration “Dead Marshes” by the Slovakian artist Matúš “Loki” Hyžný. The volume includes, amongst other things, articles on:

Tolkien Thing XII

Our latest AGM and surrounding follies took place from July 15–18, 2010. We met at a Gondorian town house in Minas Hersfeld and were joined by a merry delegation of the Danish Tolkien Society Bri. Carola Oberbeck gives an overview of the large amount of lectures, workshops, events – from boating on the Anduin, CSI Minas Tirith to the best Long Expected Party for years.

Tolkien Reading Day

The event that has been organised since 2003 by the British Tolkien Society has made its way over the Channel. Sebastian Kleinen reports on the German version in an Oberhausen bookshop.

Tolkien Tag 33

The German Tolkien Society hosts several Tolkien Days a year at different locations throughout the country. The event usually features lectures, games, lots of Hobbit food, and general fun around Tolkien. In this edition you will find Sylvia Linder’s report about our coming-of-age event in Hanover this year.

“Leaf by Niggle” – A Sermon

Parson Michael Kronast supplied us with a sermon he held on Tolkien’s “Leaf by Niggle” on the Sunday after our Tolkien Day in Hannover.

Slovakian Tolkien Society (“Fellowship of Tolkien”)

In our column “Middle-earth is everywhere”, we present sister societies from around the world. This time we travel to Slovakia where the Fellowship offers a Dragon Tower, a Hall of Fire, Athelas, the Olympic games of Eä, and many things more.

Númenor – Rise and Fall of an Empire

Andreas Zeilinger held a lecture on Westernesse at this year’s Tolkien Thing. He provides us with the first part of an overview of its history and political development. Part two is to follow in our next issue.

“Born of Hope”

An introduction to the low-budget fan film by Julian Eilmann that should make those who have not actually seen it more than curious.

Summary by Marie-Noelle Biemer
