The Essence of Colour – The Art of Queen Margarethe II

An exhibition of artwork by the Danish Queen can be seen at the Arken Museum of Modern Art in Ishøj near Copenhagen from 28 January to 1 July 2012, including her illustrations to the Danish edition of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

The largest exhibition of Queen Margarethe II’s artwork so far, in which visitors can trace her artistic development over the past 35 years, includes over 130 paintings in acryl, water-colour and collages and new works that have not been shown to be public before.

In 1969, the Queen read J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and was inspired to paint a series of landscapes for lost legends. Since then, nature is one of the central motifs in her artwork.

I was fortunate enough to have seen an exhibition by the Queen in the Skovgaard Museet in Viborg. The illustrations of the Danish Lord of the Rings edition, ink drawings far smaller than expected, were, of course, my personal highlight, followed by the wonderful collages. Definitely worth a visit!
