Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from the German Tolkien Society
2009 has been very successful for the German Tolkien Society and on behalf of the committee I would like to express my sincerest thanks to all volunteers who have spent their creativity and time on our society. Without their help this literary venture would not be the wonderful and exciting thing it is. Thank you very much.
I would like to name just a few examples to describe what has been happening over the last twelve months and do apologise for not being able to name each and every one. Otherwise this article would truly become encyclopedic in length.
Tolkien Seminar and Hither Shore have proven again how respectable and well-received our research has become. Its international renown has grown steadily over the years and I would like to express my thanks to Professor Emig and Hannover University for organising another splendid academic conference as well as to our publishing house, Scriptorium Oxoniae, for publishing volume 5 of our series. Its topic: The Hobbit.
Our Tolkien Days have seen two new locations this year: Geldern/ Lower Rhine and Rhein/Main-Frankfurt gave Tolkien fans the opportunity to locally learn more about their favourite author. A large number of additional events were organised or supported by the GTS with talks, lectures and workshops: Ring*Con, FeenCon, Elf Fantasy Fair Arcen, NordCon, BuCon etc.
Our webseite was revamped this September (close to Bilbo’s und Frodo’s birthday) including new looks and bilingual support. A big thank you to our internet team for this.
The editorial team at Flammifer von Westernis has set a new record this year to set a »backlog« right: Five issues were published instead of the usual three and just in time for the holiday season members received their latest copy with funny articles all about middle-earth. Be it the »Middle-earth Travel Agency«, step-by-step instructions on how to make your own Gondorian christmas tree or some tasty recipes right from Minas Tirith: There was enough to each and everyone’s liking.
Don’t forget: Starting on January 3rd, 2010 (yes, the Professor’s birthday) you will be able to register for Tolkien Thing XII. We will welcome you from July 15–18, 2010 in Bad Hersfeld in a Gondorian Mansion and our special guest, the Danish Tolkien Society ›Bri‹ as well as many other exciting guests providing you with a great schedule of events, talks, lectures and workshops.

All the best to you and your loved ones. I am looking forward to seeing you at one of our events, in our forum — or welcoming you as a new member.
With Father Christmas wishes,
Marcel Bülles
